North Carolina Mountain Secrets Blog

I was born right here in “little” Asheville, N.C. in 1950, down in Biltmore Village. As a sixth generation Buncombe County native of Scottish ancestry, I understand our mountains in a way few can. As a lifelong outdoorsman, my life from age 4 revolved around the outdoors….fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, and learning to be comfortable outdoors in all weather and during all seasons.

My late father was one of WNC’s most respected landscape professionals, and I began helping him at a very young age. Growing up “doing” the work of life, turning mud into gardens, banks into walls and foliage, and dirt into lush grass and flowers was my vocation until age 36. I had the opportunity to landscape many of the finest homes, businesses, and developments all across our entire mountain area. I saw first-hand how careless development was unnecessary, costly, and difficult to heal. I learned to respect our unique and challenging topography, how to make and keep land beautiful, and how important careful planning is. I use that knowledge and background every day to serve my clients, customers, and others who respect our environment and want to care for it conscientiously.

During my college years, I had a great liberal arts education, but my true major was weekends in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I have hiked many of the trails there, often spending many days in the remote backcountry far from any trailhead. After graduating from UNC at Cullowhee, I fulfilled a lifelong dream and spent four months wandering across the wilderness of the Northwest, Glacier Park, Olympic National Park, and Banff Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada. During this time, I graduated as a lover of wilderness, the vocation I am still most proud of today.

What I bring to the table is not words, or promises, or salesmanship…but experience. For over 18 years I have dedicated myself to marketing and selling undeveloped land, farms, unique residential developments, and estates across WNC. Understanding surveys, deeds, topographical maps, soils, stream ecology, agriculture, road building, site development, and drainage is pre-requisite to success here in our mountains whether you are building your retreat high on a mountain, living on a farm, or planning a unique and environmentally sound residential community.

People choose us to sell their properties because we do it well, and succeed where many others fail. The skills we bring to the table make the difference, and the trust people have placed in us calls us to maintain that trust at all costs. We believe that when you care, your care shows. That is our legacy.

Footnote: I live on a 47 acre farm with my wife of 33 years in Upper Hominy. My daughter, now married, is getting her doctorate in Developmental Psychology and my son is pursuing a medical career between foreign adventures. The photos on this page are of my farm.
